Baptism

Rob James

But something deeper was missing. "I was living a life that felt meaningless," James reflected. Atheism couldn’t answer his biggest question: What’s my purpose?

Faith is a deeply personal journey. For James, it began as a family tradition but transformed into something far greater—a story of doubt, emptiness, and ultimate renewal.

Growing up, James attended church with his parents and believed in God simply because they did. "I believed because my parents believed," he admitted. But when secular friends began to question him, asking for evidence of God's existence, James didn’t have the answers. Their questions planted seeds of doubt that eventually grew into full-fledged atheism.

During high school, James leaned into his disbelief. Sent to a Catholic school for the education, he dismissed religion class as "just another history class" and stopped participating in religious practices. By his senior year, he openly told classmates he didn’t believe. For James, atheism seemed logical and consistent with his views of science and reason.

But something deeper was missing. "I was living a life that felt meaningless," James reflected. Atheism couldn’t answer his biggest question: What’s my purpose?

The shift began when James went to college. He wasn’t looking for faith, but faith seemed to find him. Friends like Isaiah and Matthew started sharing their personal stories of transformation. One talked about overcoming bitterness and anger, while another described struggles with lust and finding peace in Christ. At first, James dismissed their testimonies. "I thought they were just making it all up to feel better," he said.

For two years, James resisted invitations to church, shutting down every attempt his friends made to bring him closer to God. But the emptiness in his life was growing harder to ignore. By his junior year, James decided to attend church with Isaiah.

The experience was eye-opening. Every service began with a reminder that "we are broken, flawed people, and Christ died and rose again because He loved us." James didn’t believe it right away, but the message stayed with him. After each service, he and Isaiah would sit in the car, talking for hours. Slowly, James began to see how faith wasn’t about scientific proof but about transformation and purpose.

Another powerful moment came when James’ friend David shared his testimony. David’s struggles with alcohol and his radical change after finding Christ struck a chord. By that point, James’ heart was open. He could see the difference faith made in his friends’ lives and began to desire that same peace for himself.

For James, the evidence of faith was clear: "I had a broken, meaningless, empty life before, and now I don’t."

Eventually, James gave his life to Christ and decided to be baptized. For him, baptism was a public declaration of the transformation he had experienced. "The old me is gone. I’m a new creation," he said. James made sure his dad was there, along with the friends who had faithfully walked with him during his journey.

James’ story is one of persistence and purpose. His friends never gave up on inviting him to church, sharing their faith, and living out the love of Christ. And now, James uses his story to inspire others who may be wrestling with doubt or struggling to find meaning in life.
