"God is always present and working—but are we paying attention?"

The Super-Normal Life: Seeing God in the Everyday

I still remember the first time I saw the night sky really light up. Not just a handful of stars scattered across the dark sky, but billions of them—so many that the blackness became the exception, not the rule. It was breathtaking, unforgettable. And here’s what’s crazy: those stars had been there the whole time. I had just never been in the right place to see them.

That’s kind of how it is with God. We believe He’s always present, always working. And yet, if we’re honest, a lot of us would say that experiencing God in a real, personal, supernatural way isn’t something we’d describe as normal. We believe it’s possible, we know others who have had those moments, but for us? It feels rare.

Why? Maybe it’s not that God isn’t working—it’s that we’re not positioned to see Him.

Moses and the Burning Bush

In Exodus 3, we meet Moses—an ordinary guy in an ordinary place, doing his ordinary job. For 40 years, he had been tending sheep in the wilderness, the same routine, day after day. And then, on an otherwise normal day, he notices something abnormal—a bush on fire, but not burning up.

Here’s the key moment: Moses could have walked right past it.

But he didn’t. Instead, Exodus 3:3 says, “Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.’” And it wasn’t until Moses turned aside that God spoke to him.

Think about that. What if Moses had been too distracted? Too busy? Too stuck in his routine? Would he have missed the encounter?

How often do we do that? How many burning bushes have we walked right past without a second thought?

How to Live a Super-Normal Life

If we want to live lives where encountering God is normal, not rare, Moses’ story gives us a few practical steps:

  1. Pay Attention to the Abnormal.
    • What are the little moments that catch your attention? A random conversation, a repeated phrase, an unexpected opportunity? Maybe it’s not a coincidence. Maybe it’s an invitation.
  2. Say the Next Yes.
    • Moses didn’t know where the journey would lead. He just responded to the next step. Too often, we get stuck waiting for the big picture before we act. But God invites us to take one step at a time.
  3. Remove What’s Holding You Back.
    • God told Moses to take off his sandals—an act of reverence, but also a symbol. Is there something in your life that’s tracking spiritual dirt into your relationship with God? What needs to go?
  4. Trust God with the Outcome.
    • When Moses asked, “How will I know this is really You?” God basically said, “You’ll see it on the other side of obedience.” We don’t always get proof before we step out in faith. The confirmation often comes after.

The Invitation

God hasn’t stopped working. He still speaks. He still moves. The question isn’t if He’s present—the question is, Are we paying attention?

What if, this week, you looked for the burning bushes in your everyday life? What if you leaned in instead of walking past? What if you simply said yes to the next thing He’s inviting you into?

You might just find that a super-natural life becomes your normal.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you ever had a moment where you felt like God was trying to get your attention? How did you respond?
  2. What are some “burning bushes” in your life right now—things that feel too coincidental to ignore?
  3. What’s one small step of faith you can take this week to be more open to encountering God in your everyday life?
