"God’s love goes infinitely beyond whatever ‘until’ we have in mind."

Gratitude often feels like a seasonal tradition, a fleeting moment squeezed between turkey and football. But what if thankfulness became more than a holiday—what if it became the rhythm of your life? Psalm 136 offers a roadmap for cultivating gratitude that’s as enduring as God’s love.

The Psalm repeats one truth 26 times: His love endures forever. That phrase, rooted in the Hebrew word hesed, describes God’s “never-stopping, never-giving-up, unbreaking, always and forever love.” It’s a love anchored in God’s unchanging character, supremacy over all, and sovereignty over every moment. His love doesn’t waver based on circumstances or our own failures.

But here’s the challenge: while God’s love is constant, our gratitude isn’t. Life gets hard, distractions creep in, and gratitude feels like a distant shore. That’s why Psalm 136 doesn’t stop at theology; it invites us into practice. The Psalmist recounts God’s creative power, historical faithfulness, and personal provision, weaving gratitude into the fabric of everyday life.

To make gratitude a rhythm, we can follow this example:

  1. Establish Rhythms: Build gratitude into your daily and annual habits. Set aside a moment each day to reflect on God’s goodness, or celebrate anniversaries of His faithfulness, like a “debt-free day” or a “healing day.”
  2. Retell Stories: Revisit how God has shown up in your life and community. Rehearse these stories with your family or friends. Remembering builds a foundation for future faith.
  3. Practice Reflexion: Combine reflection with action. Write down one thing you’re thankful for each day, or pause before meals to thank God for His provision. Over time, gratitude becomes a reflex, even in hard seasons.

Gratitude isn’t just for the good days—it’s a declaration that God’s love is unshaken, even in the dark. When you anchor your gratitude in His enduring love, thankfulness transforms from a fleeting feeling into a steady, life-giving rhythm.

Reflection Questions

  1. What is one specific moment or story in your life that reminds you of God’s enduring love? How can you retell it this week?
  2. What daily or weekly rhythms could you establish to practice gratitude more intentionally?
  3. How does reflecting on God’s character, supremacy, and sovereignty give you strength to express gratitude even in challenging times?
