As I drove home each day, my son would sit at the window, eagerly awaiting my return, his excitement visible as he saw my car approach. This anticipation is a beautiful reflection of how we should live as Christians, awaiting Jesus' return. Prophecy in the Bible is meant to stir up this anticipation, preparing us with joy and hope. However, our reactions to prophecy often vary between two extremes: either avoiding it due to its complexity or obsessing over every detail, trying to predict the future. Neither approach is what God intends.

Daniel 7-12 shifts from narrative to prophecy, revealing visions of future empires, trials, and ultimate redemption. Daniel's visions offer us four key themes to understand our future and live faithfully in the present.

Firstly, Daniel sees the "Son of Man" given authority and power, whose kingdom will never end. This points to Jesus, our Rescuer, who demonstrated His authority on earth and continues to be involved in our lives. Knowing this, we can trust that no matter how far we stray, God’s involvement and care for us remain constant.

Secondly, Daniel’s visions foretell times of trouble and tribulation. This shouldn't surprise us; our world is broken, and hardships are inevitable. Jesus assured us of this, but He also promised His peace and presence. In these times, prayer becomes our refuge, changing us and drawing us closer to God.

Thirdly, Daniel is shown the ultimate establishment of God's kingdom on earth. Despite the world’s chaos, God keeps His promises. This future hope should shift our focus from earthly concerns to the eternal joy awaiting us. It reminds us that our ultimate hope and joy lie in Jesus' return and His reign of justice and righteousness.

Finally, Daniel’s vision includes the resurrection of the dead, assuring us that even death is not the end. We live with the hope that, because of Jesus’ victory over death, we too will experience eternal life. This knowledge comforts us in our grief and gives us a hopeful perspective even in life’s darkest moments.

Daniel’s life exemplifies faithful presence. He lived in a hostile culture, yet remained devoted to God, impacting those around him. His story encourages us to live with hope, humility, and wisdom, being faithfully present as we await Jesus' return. Let’s not get caught up in trying to predict every detail of the future. Instead, let's live with the joy and anticipation of welcoming our King.
